St Michaels Catholic High School, Garston

St Michael’s asked MCR Studio to refurbish its chapel space and create a new focal point for its Christian services and education. The design created a double-height chapel space, extending into adjacent single-storey rooms. A new sanctuary was situated on a dais at the far end. This space enabled the school to seat 185 students; an entire year group.

A simple palette of natural materials and colours was employed in the interior, with white painted walls, oak joinery and stone floor.  The acoustic ceiling was designed in a curved ’wave’ form, sweeping down over the change in ceiling level, and with a series of light coffers at high level.

A set of abstract stained glass windows was commissioned and installed at high level.

Careful lighting design allowed a variety of light settings and moods, creating of a spiritual space with an atmosphere of contemplation and peace.
