Private Housing Development, Stevenage
Project Overview
This project comprises the development of two bespoke four-bedroom detached family homes, located on a discreet backland site within a premier area of Stevenage Old Town. Each house has been carefully designed to offer generous, modern living spaces, with open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas forming the heart of the home at ground floor level.
Full-height bi-fold doors, roof lights and vaulted ceilings allow natural light to flow deep into the floor plan, creating bright and welcoming interiors throughout. The bedrooms also benefit from double-height vaulted ceilings, with additional open mezzanine levels that increase usable space and enhance the sense of openness. One of the homes includes a large, naturally lit basement designed for flexible use, including a cinema room.
Externally, the houses combine contemporary detailing with materials that sit comfortably within their surroundings. Modern grey aluminium windows and bi-fold doors are balanced with red brick and white render, creating a refined yet understated appearance. Both homes are highly insulated, incorporate underfloor heating and are designed to be extremely energy efficient.
Site Constraints & Planning Considerations
The development was delivered on a constrained backland site within a conservation area, requiring careful consideration of access, neighbouring properties and the surrounding landscape. Close collaboration with the local planning authority was essential to ensure the design responded sensitively to its setting while making effective use of the site.
Access to the plot was particularly restricted, and special care was taken to protect nearby mature trees throughout the construction process. The design also carefully considered the relationship with neighbouring homes, ensuring good levels of daylight, privacy and outlook. Through a thoughtful design approach and close coordination with planners, the project successfully delivers high-quality new homes that integrate naturally into the historic context of Stevenage Old Town.
