Two 3-Bedroom Houses, Morley Hill, Enfield

A plain 1960s three-bedroom house at Morley Hill, Enfield, was extensively extended and remodelled to create two high-quality semi-detached three-bedroom homes. The project transformed an unremarkable property into a development that sits more comfortably within the historic character of the street.

Project Overview

Located in the London Borough of Enfield, the project involved subdividing the site and converting a single-family dwelling into two new homes. The scheme included partial demolition, a part single-storey and part two-storey rear extension, a two-storey front extension, two rear dormers, and new front rooflights.

Each house was carefully designed to provide bright, modern family accommodation, with open-plan kitchen and dining spaces alongside separate living rooms. Full-height sliding doors allow natural light to flow deep into the plan, creating airy and welcoming interiors throughout.

Externally, the design combines contemporary living standards with an appearance that responds more sympathetically to its surroundings. The remodelling of the original house helped replace a tired and plain-looking 1960s building with homes that better reflect the historic context and architectural character of the street. Both houses are highly insulated, incorporating underfloor heating and air source heat pumps to achieve a high level of energy efficiency.

Site Constraints and Planning Considerations

The development was delivered on a constrained site within a conservation area, requiring careful consideration of access, neighbouring properties, and the character of the surrounding townscape. Particular attention was given to the design of the elevations and fenestration to ensure the scheme responded sensitively to its setting.

Close collaboration with the local planning authority was essential in developing a design that balanced planning constraints, heritage considerations, and the opportunity to create two attractive and sustainable family homes.
